Mickey Mantle’s Last Home Run : Steven A. Falco

Mickey Mantle's Last Home Run : Steven A. FalcoTJ and Jonathan are teenage friends and teammates on the JV baseball team. Like many young people growing up in America in the late sixties, they have heroes. For TJ, who is white, it is Mickey Mantle, the aging star of the New York Yankees. For Jonathan, who is black, it is Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, 1968 is a bad year for heroes and—America.

Their friendship is strained to the breaking point when Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated. Jonathan, who is devastated by the murder, blames all white people, TJ included. TJ then has to struggle through the challenges of the JV baseball season in his racially-torn town, without the support of his friend. Is there anything that can repair their broken bond? Would it take still another American tragedy?

Combining the heartbreak and hilarity of teenage life in that tumultuous year, this coming-of-age novel provides a perspective from which to understand the racial issues that still prevail in our country to this day. In doing so, Mickey Mantle’s Last Home Run appeals not only to young adult readers but also to their baby-boomer parents and grandparents.

MIRI: The Story : Viorel Valcu

MIRI: The Story : Viorel ValcuA science-fiction novelette exploring a post-apocalyptic scenario within a cosmic environment.

Set in the early 2000s the first part introduces the main hero, during a day of his life, unlike any other. Opening up in a familiar context while detailing some of his friends as well as the common routines of a stereotypical workplace, his reality is thoroughly shaken by noon, thrust into a world that exists on the other side of the law.

Barely escaping his captors, Moe is treated by the Police in a less comforting way and succeeds in breaking free yet again. Since the entire story is devoid of his thoughts, or maybe the narrator is shockingly unprofessional, the main hero gets hooked onto more daring escapes from places he chose to be in, himself.

It is somewhere along the way that he meets an unusual friend, partly to blame for his future failures, who helps him out eventually to become better at, surviving the day. Trying to figure out the causes of his misfortunes and also clear his name, they roam the city, meet people and, escape.

But everything goes wrong until he wakes up in a spaceship. Oh wait: that’s much worse, because he doesn’t remember anything of the last … 150 years.

What’s Wrong With My Body Now? : Jill Wolff

What's Wrong With My Body Now? : Jill WolffMy discoveries and insights may help if you, or someone you care about, has a hyperactive immune system, allergies or IBS, or an illness resulting from abuse. Lifelong Autoimmune reactions made me feel like I always had some degree of the flu, along with its overall achy pain and fatigue. Doctors wouldn’t help me because it was much easier for them to say that “it’s just in your head.”

Since a magic pill wasn’t available, I found tools that I could use to actively manage the reactions’ effect on my life and to make this body as comfortable as is possible. The book includes chapters about Autoimmune and allergic reactions, using food as medicine for IBS, essential oils, cold therapy, medical marijuana, PTSD, and dog allergies. It also has a Resources chapter with links to supplemental information and personal stories from people with similar experiences.

Our technology is impressive, but it’s making the planet toxic for our bodies. My immune reactions have included a mini-stroke and a heart arrhythmia episode with a near-death experience, which is described in the book. As we are all exposed to higher levels of chemical toxicity, those of us with sensitive immune systems are experiencing illnesses that could be a harbinger for people with healthy bodies.

Nobody Cares About Your Fantasy Team : Robert DeLucia

Nobody Cares About Your Fantasy Team : Robert DeLuciaNobody cares about your fantasy team. It’s a saying as old as time. Or as old as fantasy sports. Really there’d be no way of knowing. What we do know for sure though is that nobody cares about your fantasy football team. Nope. People simply don’t have an interest in your make-believe NFL squad.

So what could this book possibly be about? How much time can we really spend talking about how little the general population of America cares about my fantasy football team? Well if Seinfeld could squeeze nine seasons out of nothing than 200 pages is a walk in the park.

If you want a story filled with romance, twist and turns, drama and engaging characters…well you’ll at least get the last thing. So come along on a historic journey as we look to find out just how true the phrase “nobody cares about your fantasy team” really is. Or, perhaps…isn’t.

Dad you’re so beautiful : Céline Audebeau

Dad you're so beautiful : Céline Audebeau“Dad, you’re so beautiful”, these are the words my daughter said the first time she saw me after my transition. This sentence continues to resonate in my head…

As Simone de Beauvoir says so well “we are not born as a woman, we become”. I waited 53 years to become the one I am today. A sometimes long, but extraordinary process of love, sharing and support.

My transition from man to woman, I chose it from beginning to end; my particularity being to make this change overnight. I entered the hospital as a man and came out five days later as a woman.

I have the audacity to believe that this book can help other people in the same situation, parents, relatives, friends. To give them a new vision of what dysphoric people are living.
