Wild Passion : Sheri Chapman

Wild Passion : Sheri ChapmanWhen Kaitlin’s father promised her hand to the foulest individual in the newly settled town, she decided she’d had enough! No man would control her anymore!

Kaitlin packed her meager belongings and headed out on foot from their remote home to find refuge in the small settlement. However, she marched straight from one man’s command into another’s. The Oglala War chief on a mission for revenge found a beautiful woman to rescue. Once the warrior had saved the girl’s life, she owed it to him forever.

Kaitlin arrived in the Oglala village in an injured state. She did not understand the Lakota language and believed they were healing her. Eventually, the solitary white woman believed these natives would return her to her community. While with them, Kaitlin learned some of their language and customs.

She made meaningful relationships with the villagers. In addition, Kaitlin also learned about the Oglala’s way of life (gathering, leather curing, basket weaving, and more). Ultimately, Kaitlin became strongly attracted to and fell in love with the fearsome war chief. When she discovered that she was considered his property and not a person with rights, Kaitlin vowed to escape, even if it meant leaving her happiness behind.

Tamed by the wild culture of these caring but fierce people, Kaitlin learns that freedom isn’t always defined by personal expectations. Being a slave could never be an option, but how could she ever want liberty when her freedom is claimed by an attractive war chief who has also captured her heart?

Landing Eagle : Mike Engle

Landing Eagle : Mike EngleInside the Cockpit During the First Moon Landing

Fifty years ago, in a small, fragile spacecraft designed for only one purpose—landing on the Moon— two American astronauts prepared to fly that spacecraft from its 10-mile high orbit above the Moon down to a landing on the Sea of Tranquility. It was a sea in name only. It was actually a bone dry, ancient dusty basin pockmarked with craters and littered with rocks and boulders.

Somewhere in that 500-mile diameter basin, the astronauts would attempt to make Mankind’s first landing on the Moon. Neil Armstrong would pilot the Lunar Module “Eagle” during its twelve-minute descent from orbit down to a landing. Col. Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin would assist him.

On the way down they would encounter a host of problems, any one of which could have potentially caused them to have to call off the landing, or, even worse, die making the attempt.  The problems were all technical-communications problems, computer problems, guidance problems, sensor problems. Armstrong and Aldrin faced the very real risk of dying by the very same technical sword that they had to live by in order to accomplish the enormous task of landing on the Moon for the first time. Yet the human skills Armstrong and Aldrin employed would be more than equal to the task.

Armstrong’s formidable skills as an aviator, honed from the time he was a young boy, would serve him well as he piloted Eagle down amidst a continuing series of systems problems that might have fatally distracted a lesser aviator. Armstrong’s brilliant piloting was complemented by Aldrin’s equally remarkable discipline and calmness as he stoically provided a running commentary on altitude and descent rate while handling systems problems that threatened the landing. Finally, after a harrowing twelve and a half minutes, Armstrong gently landed Eagle at “Tranquility Base”, a name he had personally chosen to denote the location of the first Moon landing.

In Landing Eagle-Inside the Cockpit During the First Moon Landing, author Mike Engle gives a minute by minute account of the events that occurred throughout Eagle’s descent and landing on the Moon. Engle, a retired NASA engineer and Mission Control flight controller, uses NASA audio files of actual voice recordings made inside Eagle’s cockpit during landing to give the reader an “inside the cockpit” perspective on the first Moon landing. Engle’s transcripts of these recordings, along with background material on the history and technical details behind the enormous effort to accomplish the first Moon landing, give a new and fascinating insight into the events that occurred on that remarkable day fifty years ago.

Shoot First: Code of the News Cameraman : Hank Schoepp

Shoot First : Hank SchoeppFor 29 years (1968 to 1997), Hank Schoepp covered the news for KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco. There were events he documented in the camera and witnessed firsthand which commanded regional, national and worldwide attention. Among these: getting tear-gassed during student protest and rioting at U.C. Berkeley; Patricia Hearst’s kidnapping from start to finish; searching for a vanishing school bus, its driver and 26 children in Chowchilla, California; traveling to Guyana after a mass suicide of over 900 people in Jonestown; rushing to the murder scene of a San Francisco mayor and supervisor; accounting for the devastation of the Bay Area’s Loma Prieta Earthquake, and narrowly escaping flames of the Oakland Hills Firestorm.

But there is more to this story than yesterday’s headline news, and more than meets the eye of the cameraman who shot it first and thought about it later. Filling in the years between are all the other interesting people, places and things that happen on a newscast. Here again, the reader peers into the lens of a camera to focus on subjects of every stripe: from celebrity to man-on-the-street, to hero and heroine, criminal, victim, even animal, though not necessarily in that order of importance. And, looking beyond the lens is the more intimate view of family members and of how the news touched their lives as well.

Growth and inner conflict come with the territory. The need to change attitude from passive to aggressive while shooting breaking news is addressed and ultimately resolved. Still, there will be those occasions, albeit rare, when the author questions the purpose of what he does for a living: Why am I here, covering this event? When called for, personal observation and candid opinion are offered in retrospect about working in a profession otherwise guarded by objectivity. And running parallel to mind over matter is the technical evolution of television news gathering, as chronicled through three decades of growing pains.

Shoot First will attract readers wanting to share that angle of what the author saw through his camera lens, a good number of whom are faithful viewers of television news. Additionally, there are students in journalism class learning their craft and also wanting to share the stories behind the stories; a large general audience interested in the social and civic history of the recent past; a significant senior citizen audience, recalling, or trying to recall, where they were and what they were doing when all hell was breaking loose: the book’s readership appeal reaches well beyond viewership appeal to include a broader range of age groups.

And, while there are memoirs written by and about news reporters and anchorpersons, no one has truly acknowledged those who perform behind the camera, telling it from their point of view, exclusively, completely, the way it really was, and is. Until now.
