A Tourist in Zombie Country : Urs Gretler

A Tourist in Zombie Country : Urs GretlerThis book describes in three parts how a post-apocalyptic North America, flooded by three hundred million zombies, and a Europe on the brink of collapse would look like. At the same time, it tries to explain the zombie phenomenon in a scientific way.

At first, the scientists are clueless and pursue wrong tracks. With successive discoveries and new insights they close in on the truth, which is revealed in part three.

The story is told in the first person by an elderly Swiss tourist who finds himself stranded in Memphis after the outbreak of the pandemic and who looks at some American idiosyncrasies through European eyes. He faces several problems. Among them: How do you defend yourself against the undead and against evil men, especially if you are not physically fit? How do you survive once all the grocery stores have been looted?

The first part of the book answers these questions. After spending more than one year in America, he discovers that some European countries had managed to hang on, albeit with a decimated population, and he manages to return to Switzerland thanks to the French Navy.

In part two he returns to the wastelands of North America as advisor to a French scientific expedition. Their road trip takes them to the Gulf Coast, West Texas, Kansas and the Appalachians. They return with important information about the zombies and the few survivors in America.

In part three he returns once more, this time as advisor to a battalion-sized French army unit.

The results of these expeditions, and the research carried out in Europe, lead to the discovery of the origin of the pandemic.

Personal Debt : Arturo Viale

Personal Debt : Arturo VialeAn accidental death… A dying child… A divided town… A Bronx lawyer.

Set in Kansas during the mid-1970’s, Personal Debt follows the lives of three childhood friends, Jack, Bill and Vincent. After years of personal sacrifices for each other’s welfare, the three friends realize that each of their own major accomplishments in life – is almost directly due to one or both of the others.

Jack has a major life set back when his only daughter is born with a terminal illness. Her costly medication is depleting the family funds, and Jack is forced to rob the local pharmacy which ends in the accidental death of an elderly woman – who happens to be Vincent’s mother.

Caught between personal friendship and civic duty, Bill, now the town’s sheriff, drives to the state capital to find a well-known trial lawyer – Michael Zurilli. Several years earlier, the sheriff’s testimony was crucial in proving the innocence of Counselor Zurilli’s clients.

Taking on the case for free, Counselor Zurilli, a recent widower from the Bronx, travels to this small Kansas town and must prove the innocence of a man who some town members want convicted without a trial. While sitting in the town jail, Jack’s involvement in the tragic death of his best friend’s mother as well as the depleting condition of his young daughter has made him give up on himself.

It’s up to Counselor Zurilli to not only clear Jack of all charges, but also convince him that he still has a function in the world. This is no small task. Since the death of his wife, the counselor has felt the same way about himself. The story becomes more about Zurilli and his personal struggles, and how it relates to Jack and his problems. Is the counselor there to save the day, or is he just looking to keep his mind off of his lost wife?

The Return of the Shaman : AnneClaire Venemans

The Return of the Shaman : AnneClaire VenemansThere is a call for a new, a modern shaman. As it becomes clear that our environment is changing, and that those changes are taking effect ever more rapidly — it is time to start looking at creating a better balance with nature.

Even though shamanic traditions can teach us a great deal, a new and different expression of shamanism is needed. A more modern shamanism. A shamanic expression that is a merger of both the rediscovery of our shamanic roots — going back to shamanism as it was practiced in our area at one time — and the application of the core values of shamanism in a manner that fits our way of living; our culture as it exists today.

These stories and poems are about the search for the path of the shaman in this point in time. The path of a modern shaman whose interaction with nature may grow stronger day by day.

From the simple question “Can you listen?,” to memories of the wise elders — from conversations with the old shaman and teacher M’Taka, to recollections of ancient songs and rhythms, a bridge is created between the ancient shamanic wisdom and the questions we may have in our lives today.

It is a journey that leads to the understanding that as the traditional shamanic thoughts and practices are brought into this point in time, the shaman returns in each of us choosing to walk the path…

Many have walked this path before us, each making a difference in the world. Now we are invited to embark on a journey, each in our own, unique way.

Sri Chakra Yantra : Vinita Rashinkar

Sri Chakra Yantra : Vinita RashinkarManifest anything with the symbol of everything

We are fortunate to live at one of most peaceful times in history with the added bonus of leading increasingly comfortable, long and healthy lives. Yet there is a deep sense of dissatisfaction and restlessness in most peoples’ lives as they ask themselves: “Is this all there is to life?”

I have been working as a spiritual healer for more than two decades now and I have come to believe that this ennui and boredom arises out of the complete absence of personal rituals in our modern-day lives. Personal rituals, as opposed to community rituals (that serve to offer us a sense of belonging, security and comfort, a feeling of being part of something bigger), are far more important as they give us the ability to find our place in the grander scheme of the Universe. A personal ritual makes us part of the sacred for it temporarily disengages us from our role in the profane world of humdrum existence and helps us enter into a zone of connecting more closely with the divine.

This book is an endeavour to introduce a personal ritual involving triangular work of Yantra (the geometric pattern of the Sri Chakra as it is considered the mightiest amongst all yantras), Mantra (chanting with specific focus on sounds related to the Sri Chakra) and Tantra (using a specified procedure laid out in a prescribed order).

A personal ritual involving the Sri Chakra can only be embarked upon after gaining a better understanding of its metaphysical aspects which are reflected in the philosophies underlying Shaktism, Tantra, Dasa Mahavidya and Sri Vidya. Once these concepts throw some light on the basis of Sri Chakra worship, we study the nature of sacred geometry and the significance, structure and meaning of the Sri Chakra Yantra. This is followed by two chapters that focus upon the relationship of the human body to the Sri Chakra and the connection of the Pineal Gland to the personal ritual. There is also a brief note on healing and the Sri Chakra.

This is followed by an analysis of the use of sounds in the path to spiritual growth. Special attention is given to the sounds (mantras and stotras) associated with the Sri Chakra Yantra. The next part of the book deals with the role of mudras and contains details about specific mudras that are commonly used as part of the Sri Chakra puja modality. The book then lays out in simple terms the process of the personal ritual and gives details about the initial infusion of energy into the yantra, the method of worship, path to visualisation and meditation on the Sri Chakra.

There has been a huge surge in the popularity of Sri Vidya in recent times and many self-professed gurus are charging huge sums of money to share their knowledge of this esoteric and mysterious subject to eager learners. There are a few books written in English (notable among them are V. Ravi’s Understanding and Worshipping the Sri Chakra and S. Shankarnarayanan’s encyclopedic Sri Chakra) on the subject but they are aimed at the advanced practitioner and will leave a novice confounded by their profundity and depth.

The author’s main aim writing this book is to offer all the information that a novice is seeking to get him/her on to the practice of Sri Vidya Sadhana and involve in self-learning rather than seek it from external sources.

The information is laid out in a non-dogmatic manner keeping in mind practical aspects of modern-day living, thereby allowing everyone an opportunity to learn and experience the benefits of the precious Sri Yantra. The process outlined in the book equips the readers with the skills necessary to harness the tremendous cosmic energies available in the Universe and channelize it to make life’s dreams come true.

This book is not meant to be a comprehensive study of the Sri Chakra. In presenting the Sri Chakra Yantra as a tool for self-development, the author has kept in mind sensibilities of the modern spiritual seeker, their needs and interests and has desisted from venturing into the realm of mythological references, the inclusion of which would distract and obfuscate from the subject of study. The focus has been to retain only relevant philosophical allusions that further the understanding of the subject at hand.

Seaton’s War : Lily Ennis

Seaton's War : Lily Ennis

A story of love, secrets and lies set in a sleepy New Zealand town in the latter half of WWII.

When a Japanese submarine beaches, the residents are shocked that the Pacific War has come to them. To some, the event brings opportunity for personal gain or for genuine war work.

For Kitty Williams, it is a chance to prove she can do more for the war effort than knit socks for Red Cross parcels. Taking a stand against the establishment, Kitty teaches the POWs English with the intention of learning enough Japanese to be able to intercept their radio transmissions.

When Kitty makes an unusual find, she confides in physicist Dr. Robert Anderson, who operates a direction finder, tracking movements of ships and submarines in the Pacific. But all is not as it seems with the shy academic and Kitty begins to question where his sympathies lie. Too late, she realises she has fallen in love with him.

As Kitty immerses herself in her work, her landlady Rowena struggles with the fact that her husband John is incarcerated in German-occupied Poland. Rowena’s unorthodox method of dealing with her situation is a source of tension between her and Kitty.

Woven through the book is Kitty’s relationship with her best friend Maybelle who has left Seaton to work for Navy Communications. She provides Kitty with a different slant on the events in Seaton through newspaper clippings and letters, and she regales Kitty about life in the city now the Americans have arrived.

The Pacific War, secret liaisons, the spy game and the quest for liberation in Europe weave seamlessly through Seaton’s War. As Kitty battles for personal recognition, she puts her life on the line for love, honour and above all, integrity.

Fire in the Mountain, by Lily Ennis, is also on Whizbuzz Books.

Training Your Own Full Potential Service Dog : Lelah Sullivan

Training Your Own Full Potential Service Dog : Lelah SullivanThis book is dedicated to my Uncle Joseph, who introduced me to the art of dog training more than 50 years ago. He’s been my inspiration all these years!

When I was growing up, some of my relatives raised and trained dogs for the circus (as well as other purposes) and I loved to spend time working with them, learning to train dogs.

One of my uncles used to brag that he could teach an intelligent dog to do anything that was physically possible for a dog to do, and he did some pretty amazing training, even with “average” dogs!

Service dogs as we know them today are a product of our modern life, but dogs have served man in similar ways for eons. It isn’t a new concept.

Although my uncle trained a dog to assist a deaf man when I was a child, I’d not given that much thought to Service Dogs until a decade or so ago when I myself acquired a disability.

I have wonderful family and friends who helped me in the beginning, and they were awesome (although it turns out that there are a couple of things that my Service Dog is able to accomplish more efficiently than a human helper can, due to certain dog senses being more acute than human senses) but it’s more than I want to ask of my two-legged loved ones. I don’t want my disability to affect those I care about any more than it has to.

Anyway, to make this long story shorter and wrap up the “About Me” stuff, I’ll just say that because I now use a Service Dog myself, and because I have a lifetime of dog training experience to share, I am uniquely qualified to write this book.

I believe that everyone who needs (and wants) a Service Dog should be able to have one, so I retired from my Service Dog Training Coach business, started a 501c3 nonprofit, and am focusing on consolidating my lifetime of training experience into books.

If you are training your own Service Dog, this book will help guide you through the process. It starts with the basics, creating a firm foundation to build upon for any type of Service Dog that you may be training.

When you finish the “Basic Foundation Intensive Training Program” included in this book, your dog will have several foundation behaviors that he’ll need in order to do his Work as a Service Dog, as well as one Task that can be customized to the individual for a number of types of disabilities.

Your dog will learn to have good manners in public, and also to conduct himself in a way that will allow him to keep his attention on his Service Dog Work.

I’ll show you how to teach your dog to help you deal with your life challenges, and with this method of training, he will “learn how to learn,” which will make your job of continuing his training even easier!

Note: The method taught in this book can be used to train ANY dog, including pets, to reach their full potential and become awesome, well-behaved companions.
