Sleeping Through the Nightmare : Robert Woodard
Pete, an athletic, college-educated, young man, signs on with a secure research facility located in the Arizona desert where he assists in the building of a cryogenic suspension chamber. When Pete reluctantly agrees to become the human test subject for a 90-day trial, he will come out of the chamber 108 years later when the last of the power grid, solar panels and internal storage cells gives out. What Pete discovers is that he is all alone. From a letter left in his room, he reads through the reason for his abandonment—the human population was ravaged by an uncontrolled and fast-spreading virus. First by walking, and then by a pickup Pete manages to get running, he learns that mankind is truly gone, and nature is slowly, but persistently, retaking what it once owned. Finally settling along the California coast near a small town that was once Morro Bay, Pete spends three years making a new life for himself.

A tragic accident, that April blames herself for, takes her mother from her, leaving only her and her father, Gus, to continue forward. The Stone Shield : Jonas I. Marquez
Sage is a young elf whose visions about a human girl lead her on a quest where she makes huge discoveries about herself. She soon learns that her place in the world is much more complicated than she ever realized. The journey pairs her with her neurodiverse adopted brother, her intense foster mother, and her best friend, a lone wolf.
Along the journey, she meets new people, finds love, and learns she has special powers she got from her father, her real father, not the person she believed to be her father. All while trying to avoid genocide at the hands of the Red Hand, a religious cult bent on eliminating all non-human races from the world. Can she find a place in the world where all races are accepted before it’s too late?
The Stone Shield touches on many ideas important to our times that are embedded in this fantasy story. For instance, this is not a book about mental health, but mental health plays a huge role in its characters. Just like in life, the topics it touches upon are a part of all of our daily lives. This is a book about a bunch of outcasts who come together, to find belonging, trust, love, and a fierce sense that “We protect those we love!”
A Man Walks into a Bank : Lucky Stevens
Can the last novel you read tick these boxes?
- Entertaining
- Annotated for your pleasure
- Humorous
- It was the literary equivalent of a well-prepared steak—or celery, if you’re vegan
- It was written by a humble man whose only goal in life is to bring joy to others
A Man Walks into a Bank offers all of these things, plus a lifetime of ecstatic joy and happiness. Guaranteed.*
Ellis Coldwater is a pretty easy-going bank robber. Wendy Larkin is a pretty woman—a little shy, a little nervous, and a little married. What happens when these two get together “on the job?” Whose recipe for living life will lead to the most happiness, the most laughter, and the least amount of jail time?
Our tale jumps in from page one as this novel adroitly rolls up its sleeve to expose the funny bone of crime, love, right, wrong, the pursuit of money, happiness, the vagaries of humanity that gives life meaning, and the dicey world of run-on sentences that somehow make perfect sense in the end.
If you enjoy Donald Westlake and/or P.G. Wodehouse, you will love A Man Walks into a Bank. If you enjoy their writing, even better.
