The House of Fortune : Nick Kelly
Qatar in the 1920s when life was hard for the people of the desert. On the north east coast pearl-diving was the only means of income and families could wait for months for their loved ones to return from sea.
We follow the Al Bahr family in the village of Mafjar and a young girl Lulua whose simple life helping her mother is about to end. Through the turbulent times of World War II, conflict and colonial power in the Middle East the novel covers the discovery of oil and its impact on the Al Bahr family.
From Cairo to Kuwait, London and the United States we see the tremendous change that happens in Qatar as one man leads his family through the decades.
