Tales from the Front Desk : Elisha Forrester

Tales from the Front Desk : Elisha ForresterTales from the Front Desk

What do dialing 911 over laundry, being a “victim” of a dog’s leg-lifting, watching someone undressing in public, or witnessing an event that feels as if you are in a movie have in common? In this case, it probably means you work at the front desk of a hotel!

Perfect reading for travelers, hospitality/tourism workers, or adults seeking a few “What in the world?” stories, Tales from the Front Desk tells the many stories of what hotel front desk clerks really experience.

Along with stories of the rude, crude, outrageous, and flat-out odd, readers can view tips for reserving rooms and making their stays enjoyable. Even in a small town, the stories never seem to end. Written by a front desk clerk and inspired by real people and real events, this is a book that should not be overlooked by anyone seeking a good laugh.

Spartanica : Powers Molinar

Spartanica : Powers MolinarSpartanica

Ty and Marcus Mitchell are average middle school brothers growing up north of Chicago until one night when they’re hurtled through an inter-dimensional gateway to a parallel world defined by its multiple moons and planet-wide apocalypse.

As they struggle to figure out where they are and how to get home, the boys encounter refugees of “the last day” from the distant city of Atlantis and a mysterious girl called Bellana, the sole survivor and resident of the devastated metropolis of Spartanica.

Ty and Marcus soon learn they only have seven days to get home. But before they can leave, they must battle through long-extinct deadly predators, find the elusive Professor Otherblood (if he’s still alive), and rescue a new friend from certain death.

Is all of this insanity just Ty’s overactive imagination or are the brothers truly on the brink of being stranded in the brutal wasteland known as Spartanica?

The Last Finesse : Brian Bloom

The Last Finesse : Brian BloomThe Last Finesse

This is both an entertaining and meaningful novel in today’s rickety world.

In the global corridors of power, a group of faceless men is positioning to usurp control of one of the world’s primary energy resources: uranium. Climate change looms large. Luke Sinclair is a young, Australian-born professor of mineralogy and an expert in the nuclear-fuel cycle. Up to now, he’s led a carefree, hedonistic lifestyle.

But things change: renegade North Korea is about to transfer its illicitly acquired nuclear-weapons technology to Myanmar. The CIA wants to block the development. It enlists the aid of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service. ASIS commandeers Luke, who quickly discovers there are wheels within wheels. Who has the real power? Who are his real friends? Is the attempt to corner the nuclear market ‘The last finesse’ of the faceless men who are so fixated on their personal goals they’ll risk a planetary cataclysm? Has ethical behaviour become merely an anachronism in the 21st Century gladiatorial arena?

Exporting Prosperity : James H. Boudreau

Exporting Prosperity : James H. BoudreauExporting Prosperity: Why the U.S. Economy May Never Recover…

The United States has spent a good portion of the past 20 years in or on the brink of economic recession. The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at almost zero and the Federal Government has spent trillions on so-called “stimulus”, yet the standard of living for the average American continues to decline. Jobs are few and far between, age discrimination is rife and layoffs abound, yet politicians continue to “distract and deflect” everyone’s focus towards other issues and “kick the can down the road”.

Exporting Prosperity explores the statistics that actually drive many aspects of the economy, in sharp contrast to the “feel-good” numbers reported each day. Rather than speculate on the future using traditional measures of the stock market, interest rates, etc., it starts with the statistic that people feel directly – jobs (or lack thereof).

The author explores the relationship between unemployment, the trade deficit and other key measures of the economy. He spreads the responsibility for the country’s challenges equally and presents ideas to get back on track, some old, some new, some radical and some sensical. Intermingled with the numbers are anecdotes and a sense of humor, making the book entertaining as well as enlightening.

Angels of the Quantum Gate : William David Hannah

Angels of the Quantum Gate : William David HannahAngels of the Quantum Gate

“Angels of the Quantum Gate”, currently available through Amazon and Kindle, is science fiction with a twist. It is certainly science fiction with fantasy elements, but it is encapsulated in a wry, ironic, satirical first person narrative that is *very* convincing.

It involves a simple man who is swept into galactic encounters, universal truths, and purposes that are beyond understanding. The sardonic evolves into the spiritual in a work that, somewhere, may require belief.

He Killed Our Janny : John Hansen

He Killed Our Janny : John Hansen“He Killed Our Janny”: A Family’s Search for the Truth

A shocking true story of domestic violence, physical and sexual child abuse, and a mother’s fatal journey with a very evil man.

5 Stars! “This book evoked so much emotion from me… Book voyeurs who are able to tackle tough subject matter will love this tale.”–Kim Cantrell, TCBR
~~~~~~~~~
This book is the first to explore the mysterious death of Janyce “Janny” Hansen, a former top model from Denver, Colorado. She, along with her husband and children, live in an upscale home in the suburbs. The community sees an affluent, glamorous family. The reality is far different. An abused wife who can’t let go. A husband who beats and sexually assaults his adopted children while running gambling and prostitution businesses from their home.
In the early morning hours of September 21, 1984, her husband returns home to discover her lifeless body in his Mercedes convertible parked in the garage–or so he says. Her family is led to believe she committed suicide.
Now, 25 years later, her son and daughter set out to prove her husband, a successful real estate developer rumored to have strong ties to city officials and underworld crime killed her.
Many believe the investigation into Janny’s death was a cover-up–starting with the coroner’s office–and that her husband got away with murder. As their own investigation continues, they are led to believe their suspicions are true–especially since evidence increases almost daily and points to only one killer.
Canky`s Trade : John Wheatley
Canky`s Trade : John WheatleyCanky`s Trade
In 1811, Lord Byron, pursuing a legal entitlement to lands in Rochdale, stayed at Hopwood Hall, close to the South Lancashire town of Middleton. 1811 was also a year in which the notorious Luddites were active in the region, and whose resistance to new machinery prompted the Frame Breaking Bill, which Byron was to oppose in the House of Lords.
1811 was also in the middle of the period when Oliver Canky, sexton of the parish churchyard plied his trade in bodies, destined for the dissection laboratories of the medical schools in Manchester. Add to these a local weaver and poet, Sam Bamford, a local girl turned bad, and some strange goings-on in the cellar of the isolated house of Canky`s friend, Owd Scrat, and there you have the basic ingredients of the story.
The Other Side of The Ice : Sprague Theobald
The Other Side of The Ice : Sprague TheobaldThe Other Side of The Ice
Sprague Theobald, best selling author, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, and expert sailor with over 40,000 offshore miles under his belt, always considered the Northwest Passage–the sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific–the ultimate uncharted territory.
Since Roald Amundsen completed the first successful crossing of the fabled Northwest Passage in 1906, only twenty-four pleasure craft have followed in his wake. Many more people have gone into space than have traversed the Passage, and a staggering number have died trying.
From his home port of Newport, Rhode Island, through the Passage and around Alaska to Seattle, it would be an 8,500-mile trek filled with constant danger from ice, polar bears, and severe weather.
What Theobald couldn’t have known was just how life-changing his journey through the Passage would be.
Reuniting his children and stepchildren after a bad divorce more than fifteen years earlier, the family embarks with unanswered questions, untold hurts, and unspoken mistrusts hanging over their heads.
Unrelenting cold, hungry polar bears, and a haunting landscape littered with sobering artifacts from the tragic Franklin Expedition of 1845, as well as personality clashes that threaten to tear the crew apart, make The Other Side of the Ice a harrowing story of survival, adventure, and, ultimately, redemption.
The Latecomers Fan Club : Diane V. Mulligan
The Latecomers Fan Club : Diane V. MulliganThe Latecomers Fan Club
What is it about guys with guitars in their hands that makes them so irresistible, even when they are obviously self-centered jerks?
If Abby and Maggie could answer that question, maybe they could finally get over Nathaniel. There’s just something about him when he picks up his guitar and gets behind the microphone, something that makes sensible women act like teeny-boppers instead of rational, self-respecting adults.
